IWM Duxford Airfield Safety Day on Saturday, 9 April 2016 is an important event for the General Aviation (GA) community, offering the opportunity to meet with aviation experts, listen to presentations and ask questions.
Tony Rapson, Head of the Civil Aviation Authority General Aviation Unit
The Civil Aviation Authority is making strides forward in reducing and simplifying regulations applicable to General Aviation and ensuring that, where regulation is required, it is proportionate. Tony will update on progress made since 2015’s Airfield Safety Day and will describe plans and hopes for the future.
John Korna, Head of Technical and Strategic Research, National Air Traffic Services (NATS)
NATS is the UK’s leading provider of air traffic control services and a powerful advocate of tools to improve GA aviation safety, avoid controlled airspace infringements and reduce collision risk. NATS is sponsoring Project EVA (Electronic Visibility with ADS-B) which has been running for about a year and is testing the provision of good quality traffic information in the GA cockpit.
Flight Lieutenant Isobel Tierney, in charge of Distress & Diversion
In addition to explaining what Distress & Diversion can offer, this presentation will also help GA pilots to understand how easy it is to call Distress & Diversion if help is needed.
Ian Simpson, UK Met Office
In 2015, the Met Office launched a new website aimed at the GA pilot using a mobile internet device. The team has responded to feedback on the first iteration of the website and has continued to improve website features t meet pilots’ needs. Ian will discuss this and other updates from the UK Met Office.

Also on offer to attendees at the Airfield Safety Day is a tour of the Air Space exhibition and also a tour of the Battle of Britain exhibition.
Entry to the IWM Duxford Airfield Safety Day is £5 per person. The landing fee is reduced to £8 per aircraft. If you’re unable to fly in, or the weather is poor, you may attend by car, but you must pre-book.
