+VIDEO The Volocopter electric sort-of-helicopter is expanding test flying at higher alitudes and speeds at a special test flight area in Bavaria, Germany.

The Volocopter VC200 is a vertical takeoff aircraft for two passengers that uses electric propulsion only. The first manned flight took place in Bruchsal near Karlsruhe this year at the end of March.

“The goal was to gain important knowledge in order to optimise the current developments of the new prototype for serial production,” said the e-volo, the company behind the project. “This included determining the VC200’s power requirements during different flight manoeuvres and speeds.”

The Volocopter can be operated unmanned via remote control by the team on the ground, and by altering the control software. e-volo wants to create a sporty and agile aircraft while preventing unsafe flight manoeves, no matter how aggressively the pilot operates the joystick.
