Among the many organisations in aviation, The Air League is one that quietly gets on with its mission: ‘to inspire, enable and support the next generation of aviation, aerospace and space professionals from all backgrounds’.

One of the ways The Air League does this is with its annual scholarships and last week, the charity held its annual Scholarship Awards Reception in London week, with more than 200 guests including scholarship recipients and their families.

In 2024, the Air League awarded a total of 107 scholarships: 56 Flying Scholarships, 31 Gliding Scholarships, 9 Drone Scholarships, 5 ATPL Theory Bursaries, 3 Engineering Scholarships, and 3 Electric Flying Scholarships.

Data from this year’s scholars highlights:

  • 30% are female, higher than the industry average of 6.5% for pilots
  • 45% of scholars are under the age of 18
  • 48% are aged between 18-24
  • One in four scholars are from an ethnic or minority background
  • 45% of scholars’ parents were not university educated.

In 2024, the Air League also launched the UK’s first Electric Flying Scholarships. The Air League has been working to promote sustainable air-mindedness amongst the next generation, and the Electric Flying Scholarships have ensured a renewed focus on sustainable aviation.

The reception also saw the presentation of three additional annual awards.
