Various scholarships including for powered flying are available from The Air League which launched its 2024 Flying and Gliding scholarships today.
Applications for the scholarships close on Sunday 7 April. The Air League is looking for individuals with a passion for aviation and aerospace and the determination to learn, grow and succeed.
In 2023, the Air League awarded a total of 93 Flying and Gliding scholarships. Data from last year’s cohort of scholars shows that 31% were female – a figure significantly higher than the industry average of 6.5% for pilots. Almost half (49%) of scholars were under the age of 18, while 47% were between the ages of 18 and 25.
A major focus of the Air League is to support young people from all backgrounds to pursue and kickstart a career in aviation. This includes a belief that there should be no educational, financial or social barriers standing in the way of those who want to succeed. Last year, one in three (33%) of scholars were from an ethnic or minority background.
Ian Morrison, Chief Executive Officer at The Air League, said, “Each year we’ve been fortunate enough to have an exceptional group of young people, many without any experience of flying, take full advantage of our Flying and Gliding Scholarships. We’ve seen young people not only develop their skills and understanding of the industry, but the confidence in their ability to pursue a career that might not have always felt open to them.
“We strongly urge anyone with a passion for aviation or aerospace to learn more about the scholarships and apply. There are opportunities in this industry for everyone, and skills which you or someone you know may have to help take it to the next level.”
The Air League’s scholarships are open to anyone who meets the requirements listed in the flying and gliding application criteria. The minimum age for gliding applicants is 14 and the minimum age for flying applicants is 16. There is no upper age limit across all scholarships.
