+VIDEO The new Air Race World Championship is due to kick off in May 2022 with seven races scheduled to take place through the 2022 season.
Venues announced include Egypt, Greece, Portugal, United Kingdom, Russia (in doubt, now), Indonesia and the Middle East.
If this sounds like the Red Bull Air Race Championship which ran until 2019, it’s because it is based on that series with a similar format and some of the same pilots.
Twelve race teams have so far signed-up for Elite class in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 race seasons, according to Touchpoint Group, a media and digital technology company involved in the organisation.
There are a further twelve further challenger pilots competing in the new second tier Aero Series. Red Bull maintains its interest with continued sponsorship of former World Champion Martin Sonka in the Elite series.
There are changes though. New race categories are to be introduced include electric powered aircraft, EVTOL (vertical take off and landing) and JetPacks.
The Air Race World Chamlionship has Willie Cruickshank as Race Series Director. A former RAF Squadron Commander, Willie previously served as Head of Aviation and Sport for Red Bull.
Air Race will also use Prometheus zero net carbon aviation fuel to accelerate its goal to become net zero emissions by 2025.
Prometheus Fuels uses its Titan Fuel Forge to create ‘fuel from air’ by reclaiming atmospheric carbon through a reverse combustion process.
Starting with gasoline for ground vehicles, California-based Prometheus will subsequently add the production of diesel, jet fuel and aviation gasoline to its zero net carbon fuel product range.
Touchpoint has already held a five-day training camp for new competitors at Sywell.
