Airfield wins planning application shock: Way to go Truro!

An airfield wins a planning application! Yes, Graham and Suzanne Barral, who own and operate Truro Aerodrome, have finally received planning consent to build 17 timber holiday lodges.

The all-grass aerodrome is located west of Cornwall’s only city and had its original application turned down. However, a revised plan went through on 9 March

“The final hurdles were over the need to increase biodiversity on the site despite the formation of a lake,” said Graham Barral, who also thanks FLYER readers for their support during the process.

“The planning consent is for 17 timber lodges, with part sedum roofs, a kayak and bicycle rental shed that will sell essential goods such as food items, plus the creation of a lake, access road and landscaping.”

The lodge and lake site is immediately adjacent to Truro airfield and will not interfere with aviation operations.

“Each unit will have solar power and power from the nearby wind turbine,” continued Graham. “This should be a carbon zero development.

“There is a footpath on the boundary of the site that leads to a bus stop from which all of Cornwall can be accessed and the rest of the country from the stop at Truro Railway station.

“The plan is to lease one or two electric cars, depending on demand, charged on site, for pilots to travel further afield. The current thought is that each lodge will be named after a vintage British aircraft, e.g Hurricane, Tiger Moth, Lancaster, Swordfish.”
