CAA gives OK to stage 2 of airspace plan

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has given the go-ahead for the latest version of the airspace change masterplan, developed by the Airspace Change Organising Group (ACOG).

The airspace change masterplan identifies which UK airspace design changes need to be developed to achieve the benefits of airspace modernisation and then set out a single coordinated implementation plan to deliver those benefits.

ACOG is taking a bit-by-bit approach to developing the masterplan with public consultation later this year. Click here for the latest version of the masterplan.

Stuart Lindsey, Head of Airspace Modernisation at the CAA, said, “This is the first time we have accepted an iteration of the airspace change masterplan in to the AMS and this is a big step forward. This will help facilitate the development of the airspace changes in a co-ordinated manner, which is crucial to the success of airspace modernisation. Reaching this point has been a significant achievement.”

Meanwhile, a further £3.7m funding from Government is going towards the airspace modernisation project, bringing the taxpayers’ contribution to £9.2m.

The extra funding was announced by Aviation Minister Robert Courts. He said, “By redesigning our skies, we are creating a modern UK airspace that is fit for future generations and makes journeys quicker, quieter and greener.”

Head of the Airspace Change Organising Group (ACOG), Mark Swan, added, “This programme is a critical national infrastructure project for the UK and will deliver benefits across the country – from increasing efficiencies in the routes aircraft fly to supporting the industry to deliver its net zero targets.

“With airspace not updated since the 1950s, it remains a programme that is long overdue.”

Further funding for the project will come from airports.
