CAA revises Medical Self-Declaration form

self-declare medical for pilots

Good news for UK pilots wanting to use the recently announced self-declared medical – the CAA has revised the online form to allow for pilots with existing medical conditions.

The new Medical Self Declaration form for UK PPL and NPPL holders now has an additional clause saying:

To Only Fly an Aircraft of 2000kg MTOW or Less
You may fly an aircraft of 2000kg or less, provided you are not taking medication for any psychiatric illness, by declaring your fitness to fly by ticking the ‘no greater than 2000kg’ declaration at the end of this form.

Steve Slater, CEO of the Light Aircraft Association, said, “This effectively returns us to the position agreed during last year’s ANO consultation. If you’re fit to drive to the airfield, you’re fit to fly.

“Special thanks are due to Geoff Weighell of the BMAA for co-ordinating responses [from the BMAA, LAA, BGA and BBAC] and to Tony Rapson at the GA Unit for responding so promptly to our concerns.”

Should that not say “Provided you have not been prescribed medication for any psychiatric illness”? Someone who should be taking such medicine but chooses not to could quite honestly sign the form as currently worded, which may not be in line with the desired outcome. Just a thought.
