‘Design, Build, Fly’ is not only the theme for the Royal Aeronautical Society’s conference in October but also a new initiative to address the skills gap in UK aerospace.
The Society’s conference is one of its annual flagship events, hosted by the President David Chinn. It has a focus on General Aviation as GA is best placed to staret the ‘Design, Build Fly’ initiative. One of the speakers on the two-day event is Simon Tilling, CEO of the Light Aircraft Association.
The Society said, “Design, Build, Fly (DBF) is a new initiative which aims to address the skills gap in the UK aerospace, aviation and space sectors of people with expertise covering all three elements of designing, building and flying an aircraft or rocket.
“Drawing inspiration from the German Akafliegs – groups of aeronautical engineering students who team up to design, build and fly small aircraft – DBF aims to build a new collaborative community to develop these cross-cutting skills among young aerospace professionals and students in the UK.
“This conference will present insights from experts in each element of Design, Build, Fly, as well as personal stories and examples from the German Akafliegs and other collaborative initiatives.
“By encouraging conversations across the industry, DBF aims to support the whole aerospace sector by building a skilled workforce which will benefit future innovation in aerospace, aviation and space.”
Booking is now open for this conference. Both RAeS Members and non-members are welcome to attend. It will be held at the Royal Aeronautical Society Headquarters, No.4 Hamilton Place, London W1J 7BQ, on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 October 2024.
