Farway Common Airfield, near Sidmouth in Devon, will reopen in early summer and has already agreed to stage three fly-ins.
The first is its own: The Farway Welcome Fly-in over the weekend of 21-22 May. “All welcome,” said the new owner of the airfield James Hortop. “There’ll also be overnight camping, BBQ and bar.” If interested, register through the airfield website.
Next up is a fly-in organised by the Devon Strut of the LAA on 18 June. The Devon Strut has been connected with Farway Common for years through the previous owner, the late Terry Case. Details through the Devon Strut website.
The third fly-in announced so far is a visit by European Luscombes, the loose association for Luscombe owners in Europe. Their dates are for the long weekend of 22-24 July.
Nigel Barratt, who started European Luscombes and owner of G-BRUG, said, “After a long absence, the European Luscombe and Friends (ELF) fly-in returns in grand style at the newly reopened and scenic Farway Common, Devon.
“Although it’s specifically a Luscombe event, we are also inviting those who are affiliated with Luscombes, those who have previously owned a Luscombe, supported Luscombes or wish to own one. LAA staff and engineers who are associated with these beauties are also most welcome.
“Although some of us are flying in on Friday afternoon, the main event is all day Sat and finishing mid Sunday afternoon. A large BBQ and deep freeze and fridge are provided to keep your drinks cool, so bring your own and cook your own! Overnighting camping space with basic toiletries are provided.
“Thanks to the kind generosity of new owners James and Catherine, we are hoping to make this an annual event and perhaps one day beat the record of 25 Luscombes at Oaksey!
“Please ‘register’ on the European Luscombe Facebook page to let us know you’re coming. Should be a great event!”
