Garmin upgrades Pilot app with W&B and performance calcs
21 November 2016
Garmin has upgraded its Pilot flight planning and in-flight navigation app for Apple devices with a host of useful features.
They include:
Weight and balance
Garmin Pilot Weight & Balance calculation.
Incorporate weight and balance calculations into a flight plan, taking into account fuel burn and more
Pre-loaded aircraft types or enter W&B figures manually
If CG limits are exceeded, pilots receive a visual alert
Performance calculations
Calculate performance taking into account aircraft weight, outside temperature and pressure.
Calculate climb, cruise, descent profiles and more
Calculations take into account factors such as outside air temperature (OAT) and altitude
Pre-loaded aircraft, or manually input performance data for a specific aircraft and/or share performance data among multiple Garmin Pilot accounts
flyGarmin integration
Input and save aircraft performance data, as well as checklist information into the flyGarmin website and sync it to the Garmin Pilot app
Freehand
Draw a route and modify the flight plan on the map with a tap on the screen, to plan or fly around weather, airspace, terrain or other features without leaving the moving map
Customised checklists
Create a checklist customised to your aircraft.
Interactive checklists can easily be created and displayed within the app
Additional features
Import user waypoints using a CSV file format from a computer
Creat flight plans on a computer using AOPA’s Flight Planner or SkyVector and send to Garmin Pilot
Configure the home screen icons.
Garmin video explaining Pilot features
“We continue to pack more features and incorporate more capabilities into Garmin Pilot to provide our customers with a premier, all-inclusive application,” said Carl Wolf of Garmin.
“Pilots have been requesting an all-in-one app that merges their flight plan with other information pertaining to the flight, such as performance calculations, weight and balance and more. We’re excited to be the first to bring our customers this fully integrated experience so pilots have everything they need – from pre-flight to post-flight – all within Garmin Pilot.”
I have Garmin Pilot. Garmin touts its new ability to file flight plans. However, if one files a VFR flight plan, it gets sent to Eurocontol and is discarded – it doesn’t get forwarded to anywhere. Garmin doesn’t understand that International VFR flight mandates a flight plan – and that very many European flights are International. It has a (very) long way to go to be comparable to SkyDemon. Unfortunately. If it was really serious about the European market, it would know this stuff – but I can only conclude that it is not.
