Five scholarships to fly an electric aircraft have been announced by social mobility charity The Air League.
The scholarships are available to people from disadvantaged backgrounds. They will take place with Saxon Air at Norwich Airport flying the world’s first certified electric aircraft, the Pipistrel Velis Electro. The scholars will also experience simulator time, ground school, and sustainability lessons.
The Air League says it has been working to promote the importance of sustainable aviation amongst young people, and the Electric Flying Scholarships will ensure a renewed focus on making the next generation of the aviation industry environmentally conscious.
The Pipistrel Velis Electro produces zero emissions during operation and is a two-seat light aircraft intended primarily for pilot training. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of 98 kcas, maximum altitude of 1200ft and a maximum range of 50 minutes.
Candidates must have a strong interest in sustainable aviation and should wish to pursue the topic further into their career. Applications will close on 7 April 2024, with the successful candidates completing their courses over the summer.

Ian Morrison, CEO of The Air League, said, “At The Air League, our vision is to change lives through aviation and believe there should be no educational, financial, or social barriers for those who want to succeed.
“We’re therefore thrilled to be working with Saxon Air to provide the UK’s first electric flying scholarship for the next generation of aspiring aviators who want to work for a more sustainable industry.
“Saxon Air are at the forefront of making the aviation industry more environmentally friendly, and this partnership shows how vital it is for businesses across the industry to support paid placement schemes like this and nurture the next generation of the workforce.”
