The government’s plan to sell off 15 military aerodromes around the UK for housing is to be reviewed.
The Defence Minister, the Rt Hon Tobias Ellwood MP, has pledged to look again at the sell-off following discussions with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on General Aviation.
The all-party group urged officials to pursue a mixed-use approach to developments on aerodromes to meet the government’s stated objective of making the UK the best country in the world for General Aviation.
The Minister and officials from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (the body responsible for the country’s defence infrastructure) acknowledged that retaining at least some of these aerodromes for aviation use could be beneficial, not only to local economies, but also to potential future UK defence needs.
Grant Shapps MP, chair of the all-party group, said: “It was productive to sit down with the Defence Minister responsible for the Ministry of Defence estate, including our culturally and economically important military aerodromes.
“The Minister clearly understood the issues facing the £60.6bn wider aviation sector and, unbeknown to the APPG in advance of the meeting, happens to understand General Aviation too, as a current FAA licence holder.
“The all-party group is encouraged by the Minister’s commitment to look again at the list of aerodromes due to be sold-off to developers and has promised us a detailed letter back.
“These airfields have been built and maintained at vast public expense and are a national resource. They are practically irreplaceable and should be recognised as such in government policy.
“It’s in everyone’s interests that General Aviation and the wider aviation sector can thrive, so it’s absolutely vital that the Ministry of Defence works closely with the Department of Transport on this issue going forwards.”
