Hangar Homes developer Peter Day has confirmed that a full planning application to build ‘live-work’ housing units on Solent Airport has been submitted.
“After three years and a huge investment in time and money, I am pleased to announce the very first full planning application in the UK for hangar homes on Lee-on-Solent Airfield,” said Peter.
“Because the airfield is zoned for employment use, the planning application is for five ‘live/work’ units aimed at aviation-based businesses, whose owners wish to live above their business and their plane.
“However, whatever happens at Lee-on-Solent will determine whether hangar homes are adopted at other GA airfields in the UK. Therefore, even if you are not interested in a ‘live/work’ hangar home on Lee-on-Solent Airfield, please support the planning application with Gosport Borough Council.”
“If planning permission is granted, Hangar Homes Ltd will be based in one of the units, and will also be a show-home for prospective buyers of hangar homes elsewhere in the UK and Europe.
“These hangar homes will hopefully breath new life into GA airfields and GA generally in the UK, as they have done in the USA for over 60 years, and are now doing so in mainland Europe.”

It is an excellent proposal combining residential and commercial facilities and will, if successful, encourage other such developments and help ensure the ongoing viability of many smaller airfields.
This is a first rate initiative. All over the UK aviation infrastructure is falling into disuse. At the same time there are shortages of housing, housing/commercial, and light industrial space. This will drive regeneration of the light aviation industry which is being forced away from established airfields by commercial traffic and correspondent spiralling charges from airport “services” companies.
What a brilliant idea! Its a niche market for sure, but for people who travel / would like to travel by air for work or pleasure, its fantastic. Also save on hangerage fees for your plane. I wish it every success. We should do whatever we can to preserve our airfields. Especially as the bigger airports aren’t interested in GA, as shown by extortionate charges for “handling” when all it consists of is being picked up from your aircraft and taxied a few yards to the terminal…
