Houses to be built on Long Marston Airfield

The future of Long Marston Airfield in Warwickshire is in doubt after Stratford District Council approved plans for 400 houses on a corner of the airfield. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg – a total of 3,500 houses are expected to be built eventually plus infrastructure changes.

The application by Cala Group, a major UK housing developer, has been granted despite opposition from neighbouring parish councils and the many groups who make use of the airfield facilities. In addition to being an active airfield for light aviation, Long Marston is also one of the UK’s top drag racing strips, and hosts everything from Sunday markets to rock concerts.

The local newspaper, the Stratford Observer, which carried the story on its website included comments from many critics including Mike Burrowes who said, “This headline is misleading. It should read ‘Stratford Council approves closure of Shakespeare County Raceway, Stratford Carboot and Market, busy truck stop, microlight and glider club, model flying club, and clay shooting club’.”

Stratford District Council’s planning officer said, “Assessing the planning balance, I consider that the benefits from the scheme in terms of economic, social and environmental criteria would outweigh the identified harm, and therefore, I have concluded that the proposal is sustainable development and should be approved.”
