It’s the dream of most pilots: have your own strip and live on the airfield. And you can! Kittyhawk Aerodrome – ‘a hidden gem by the picturesque South Downs’ – is for sale.
UPDATE 23 September 2024 – the sale of Kittyhawk Aerodrome has been concluded, and the new owner David Stuart announced at the Fly-in BBQ on 21 September 2024
The sale includes Kittyhawk House, a large open plan architect designed modern house, aerodrome office and hangar and 66.79 acres of land, which includes the perfectly formed six grass runways (yes six! 16L/34R, 16R/34L and 10/28).
The location is idyllic, in East Sussex not far from Lewes, with the South Downs National Park forming a nearby backdrop.
The three/four bedroom house, built in 2020, is really special and the estate agent blurb describes it fully on RightMove.
Of course, what we’re interested in is the airfield, conceived in 1990 as a private airstrip for the proprietor’s aircraft. At the time, the strip was operated on the so-called ’28-day rule’. Over time two grass runways were constructed as well as a hangar and concrete apron to form what’s now Kittyhawk Aerodrome.
“As the use intensified into what was by now a ‘proper’ aerodrome, after great efforts and expense and 30 years of persistent endeavour, in March 2020, the planning authorities granted Kittyhawk the status of a lawful unlicensed airfield to be developed commercially,” say the details.
So what’s the drawback? None, really, so long as you have a cool £5 million (at least, the asking price is ‘Offers in excess of £5m’).
