31 March 2003
At first we thought it was an early April Fools joke, but sadly it appears not to be the case. Meigs Field, the famous lakeside Chicago GA facility (and the default airfield on Microsoft FlightSim) has been
effectively destroyed, apparently on the orders of Chicago’s notoriously anti-aviation Mayor Richard M Daley.
The Chicago Tribune reports that late on Sunday, escorted by the police,
construction vehicles moved in and dug up parts of the runway, effectively
stranding 16 aeroplanes (see, you’re hoping it’s an April Fool, too).
The Mayor is due to give a press conference later today explaining his
actions. You can bet that there’ll be plenty of people listening, and plenty
of lawyers working on their cases as you read this.
