Sky-World PJ-11 Dreamer kitplane

VIDEO A Russian designed and built kitplane that looks like a bit like an F-15 fighter made a late debut at Sun ‘n Fun on Saturday. The Sky-World PJ-11, nicknamed ‘Dreamer’, fought through “dozens of bureaucratic roadblocks from two different countries” to appear at the Florida airshow.

The PJ-11 has a pair of ducted fans either side of the slim fuselage, driven by a Chevrolet Corvette V8 engine developing 388bhp. Each five-blade fan is 680mm diameter. Max takeoff weight is 1,380kg, empty weight 986kg.

Sky-World, which is based at an airfield on the outskirts of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) in Russia, says the PJ-11 has a top speed of 218mph, cruise speed of 187mph and is stressed to +4.4/-2.2 g. Max rate of climb is claimed to be 2,500fpm. With a fuel capacity of 280 litres, max range is said to be 745 miles.

The two-seat aircraft first flew in March 2015 and has about 40 flying hours so far. This particular aircraft will stay in the US for the EAA AirVenture show at Oshkosh at the end of July.

Sky-World is offering the kit from a start price of $89,950 which includes retractable landing gear, engine gearbox, fan assemblies and engine mount, but not the engine itself. A total cost of $125,000 is suggested. Build time is advertised at 2,000 to 2,500 hours.
