French startup aircraft manufacturer Aura Aero has won access to a €94 million grant to accelerate its development of electric and hybrid-electric aircraft.
The grant comes from the European Union ‘Innovation Fund’ which is funded by revenues from the EU’s Emissions Trading System – the world’s largest carbon pricing system. The size of the fund depends on the price of carbon credits but the EU says “it may amount to about €40 billion from 2020 to 2030, calculated by using a carbon price of €75/tCO2.”
François Durovray, French Minister delegate for Transport, was at Aura Aero’s base at Toulouse-Francazal Airport last week to announce the grant.
“I am very proud to announce the launch of the first French electric aircraft, developed by the Toulouse-based startup Aura Aero,” he said. “This event marks a decisive stage in our commitment to a more sustainable and decarbonized aviation.
“Aviation is a crucial sector for our economy, but it must also evolve and address environmental challenges. Thanks to innovation and to the expertise of our French companies, we are taking a step further towards a responsible air mobility.
“This electric aircraft [Aura Aero’s Integral E electric two-seater – Ed] not only represents major technological progress, it also symbolizes our determination to reduce our carbon footprint.”
The Integral E is expected to make its first flight soon. It’s expected to have a flight time of 60 minutes.
Aura Aero is also working on a hybrid-electric regional aircraft called ERA.
“We wish to thank the Minister for his support,” said Jérémy Caussade, President and co-founder of Aura Aero. “Thanks to the French and European institutions who have helped us, we have succeeded in developing Aura Aero and becoming a major player in the global aeronautical landscape. We hope that this support will continue to accelerate the decarbonization of aviation.”
