Steve Slater is standing down from the role of Chief Executive of the Light Aircraft Association in spring 2023, after seven years in the job.
“I have been planning and discussing this with our chairman for some months now,” explained Steve.
“Having turned 65, it’s time for some new ideas and initiatives, but I’m particularly keen to give a long period of notice, to ensure the Association has a smooth transition to my successor and that the LAA continues to remain the UK’s most successful powered flying members association. For a like-minded enthusiast, it’s the best job in the world!”
During Steve’s time in the job, he helped oversee changes in LAA Engineering to drive better member services. He’s also been a strong advocate on the need to properly integrate light aircraft and uncrewed aircraft into future airspace strategies.
Among his wider roles, Steve has worked on the protection of airfields as the LAA representative on the GA Awareness Council and represented the association with the GA Alliance, Royal Aero Club and the European Federation of Light Experimental and Vintage Aircraft, EFLEVA. He has also played a significant role in briefing the CAA and Department of Transport on issues surround recreational aviation.
Within the LAA, Steve has introduced events such as Meet the LAA and Virtual Pub Nights, and worked to interest more GA pilots in the benefits of LAA membership.
However, it hasn’t all been positive. Just before the LAA’s Annual General Meeting in October, it was revealed that the association had fallen victim to a bank fraud scam.
