The Tech Pro Merlin single-seat deregulated aircraft (SSDR) given its UK debut at FLYER Live at the end of November has made its first flight.
UK agent Graham Smith of Sprite Aviation flew the Merlin for 25 minutes. “It was an exciting flight. It’s a very high performance aircraft. The strip was very boggy but I was off the ground in 40 yards, and up to 75kt by the end of the strip.”
“The controls are very light,” continued Graham, “but well harmonised. At 5500rpm it was doing 86kt on the level. I tried it at 5250rpm but the engine wasn’t happy. I’ll have to re-pitch the prop [it’s ground adjustable – Ed] so it’ll cruise at 80kt. The stall speed clean is 41kt. With flap it’s 35-40kt. Approach speed is around 45kt. The flaps are very powerful – the maximum is 40 degrees.
“The only problems were the tickover, a lot of radio noise and the trim button is very easy to knock with your elbow.”
The Merlin is made by Czech company Tech Pro Aviation with a range of engine options. Graham’s aircraft has a Rotax 582 engine giving 65hp which for an aircraft with a max gross weight of 300kg is plenty. An electric motor is planned for US and German versions (with a higher weight). Verner Scarlett and Hiller engines are also possible.
Graham confirmed that the first three factory-built aircraft are already sold at £20K each with delivery due in the Spring. Five more aircraft in kit form are on order at £10K each.
