+VIDEO Tecnam has been awarded full type certification by EASA for the STOL (short take-off and landing) version of its P2012 Traveller.
The P2012 STOL aircraft is engineered to operate from airports and airstrips with short runways and demanding operational constraints. However, the STOL still shares 99% of its parts with the standard P2012.
Take-off distance at Max Take-off Weight (MTOW) is 425 metres for the STOL version compared with 682m for the standard aircraft. Likewise, landing distance is reduced to 360m from 590m. Rate of climb is also better with a max of 1400ft/min for the STOL, compared with 1285ft/min.
The STOL performance comes from longer wings. The P2012 STOL wingspan is 16.6m compared with 14.0m for the standard aircraft.
While the extra 2.6m wingspan helps take-off and landing performance, it doesn’t help fuel burn. We haven’t seen actual fuel consumption figures, however, the STOL’s theoretical max range is reduced to 905nm from 950nm from the same size tank (750 litres).
The P2012 STOL is only available with a pair of Continental GTSIO-520-S engines, developing 375hp each and swinging three-blade 2.26m diameter MT propellers. The standard P2012 has a choice of Lycoming or Continental engines.
Both aircraft are certified for up to 11 people, usually two pilots plus nine passengers. Max gross weight is 3680kg with a useful load of 1284kg. Both can be reconfigured from passenger interior to cargo, combi, or air ambulance within minutes.
The cockpit includes a Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit, GFC700 specifically tuned autopilot, and ADS-B IN/OUT. An active and connected flight deck (Bluetooth, flight stream, Iridium) and a toolbox of modern aids (Wx radar, storm scope, inset map, Synthetic Vision‚Ñ¢) are provided.
