The uAvionix TailBeaconX Mode S ES transponder STC has been approved by the UK CAA , which means it can now be fitted to certain UK registered aircraft.
As with the EASA STC for TailBeaconX, the Approved Model List (AML) equals the original FAA STC-AML SA04568CH and is applicable to all of the 550 make and models with a UK type certificate that are on the original FAA AML. This includes most major models from Cessna, Piper, Mooney, Beechcraft, and others. Additional models, including light twins, and UK or European built models not on the FAA AML are expected to be added in the next few months.
TailBeaconX is an integrated 1090 MHz ADS-B transponder that replaces a rear navigation light by combining it with an ADS-B OUT / Mode S transponder, SBAS GPS, antennas, and a rear LED position light.
TailBeaconX uses the uAvionix AV-30-C multi-function display installed as the control head for which a separate STC has already been issued by CAA. In this configuration, the AV-30-C is able to leverage the TailBeaconX SBAS GPS for its GPS track display. In the future uAvionix anticipates adding additional means of control through uAvionix and third-party devices.
Besides providing the safety and operational benefits of having ADS-B OUT for Air Traffic Control (ATC), TailBeaconX will enhance situational awareness for other aircraft equipped with ADS-B IN.
“uAvionix is working with the Light Aircraft Association to get TailBeaconX added to the LAA’s TL 3.03 approved avionics list for Permit-to-Fly aircraft. We hope to achieve this before the LAA Grass Roots Fly In at Popham [in September], where uAvionix will be exhibiting,” said the company.
