+ VIDEO The tiny Spacek SD-1 single-seat deregulated (SSDR) aircraft will soon be available in the UK through a new dealer, Jiri Krajca, who is based at Plaistows Farm Strip, near St Albans, Herts. The Czech-designed SD-1 is available as a self-build kit and also as a ready-to-fly factory-built aircraft.
The design philosophy of the SD-1 is to keep its weight as low as possible for good performance, whilst providing handling suitable for the low time pilot, but at the same time keeping it simple to build, according to Igor Spacek who created the diminutive SD-1. It’s so small that the pilots almost ‘wears’ the aircraft. Spacek hopes to display the aircraft at this year’s LAA Rally in September.
The SD-1 design uses carbon fibre pultrusions in its spars and the reinforcement of the fuselage in such places as the undercarriage mounts. The SD-1 main wing spar weighs just 2kg yet achieves an ultimate load capacity of 7.5 g thanks to this material, said Spacek. The aircraft has a service load of +4/-2 g.
The ribs of the wing and tailplane are made of extruded polystyrene. The whole aircraft is covered with plywood, with composite mouldings being used for complex shapes such as the wingtips, cowlings and fairings.
Engine choices range from a 22hp Trabant car engine, to a 50hp Hirth. Maximum level speed is 119mph.
The 4th International SD-planes Fly-in will be held on 16-17 July 2016 at Landau in der Pfalz, Germany
