+VIDEO Nineteen-year-old pilot Zara Rutherford will be setting off on her round-the-world flight in a Shark microlight on Wednesday, 18 August from Kortrijk Airport in Belgium (EBKT).
Take-off time is set for 1030 local time. Zara hopes her flight – FlyZolo – will set two records. First as the youngest woman to fly around the world, and two, the youngest person to fly around the world in a microlight.
“I’ll be setting off on my mission to fly solo around the world raising awareness of women in aviation and STEM, and encouraging young people to follow their dreams!” said Zara. “And hopefully breaking a couple of world records along the way!”
FLYER’s Jonny Salmon interviewed Zara on the FLYER Livestream earlier this month. Here’s the interview:
“I have just completed my A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Physics, and hope to go to university to study computer science/computer engineering.,” said Zara.
“I have been flying for as long as I can remember (both parents are experienced pilots) and qualified as a pilot last year. In my spare time I run a small sneaker business and like to code!”
Zara has recently been at the Shark factory in Slovakia for maintenance of the aircraft and intense flight training. Shark posted this video of Zara taking off in the 600kg high performance microlight, now fitted with an extra fuel tank on the rear seat.

What’s the tail number that brings Zara’s aircraft up? Yesterday she was showing as a Sportcruiser but I can’t find that flight now. The Reg brings up an airline, OM-S443 brings up the Shark but no flights.
To answer my own question she’s just left Aberdeen and OV443 is the number to search for.
