Cessna lays off workers

As expected, Cessna has a number of its workers that they will be losing their jobs in the New Year. The cuts are to be made in the Wichita and Bend, Oregon factories. However, the number of enforced job losses isn’t as bad as had been feared – 500 people have lost their positions, as opposed to the 665 originally suggested.

The shortfall of 150 jobs will come from those choosing to take the voluntary leaving package.

At the same time, Piper has told its employees that it will be shutting its plant down for longer than normal over Christmas. The company normally shuts for between one and two weeks; this year it will shut for three weeks.

“In accordance with normal seasonality and softening market demand, Piper continually assesses and adjusts its workforce and schedule accordingly,” Piper spokesman Mark Miller is quoted as saying. Employees will apparently use ‘vacation time or take unpaid days without penalty during the shutdown’, according to reports in the Palm Beach Post.
