OK, so we’re taught during the PPL course how to make a Practice Forced Landing (PFL) and you may have even landed at an airfield on such an exercise. Some may even have made a genuine ‘dead stick’ landing after engine failure.
But have you ever made a dead stick takeoff, followed by flight and landing? Yes, gliders do something like this but usually they have some form of powered assistance to takeoff.
So, how do you takeoff with no power? Find a very steep mountainside and point the nose downhill, disengage your brain, and hope to get airborne before hitting a rock… commonsense not needed.
