World Photography Day 2022

Aviation and photography go together hand-in-hand, whether it’s the majesty of the machine or unique views of the Earth, we’re lucky to be treated to spectacular sights so regularly.

Below, Ed Hicks and Jonny Salmon share some of their favourite images.

Ed Hicks

Well known for his work with FLYER Magazine, Ed was Editor for over 100 issues until December 2021, when he made the switch to Editor at large. Having worked as an aviation photographer since 1996, he has produced images for magazines and aircraft manufacturers that have been published worldwide. Ed picked a few of his favourites to share.

Some shoots are like a dream… perfect aeroplane, perfect light and perfect pilots. This shot of a rare and beautiful Lockheed Electra Junior one February evening in Florida in 2014 was from exactly one of those occasions.
Ed captured this Waco on floats in 2018. "The wind direction meant the light should have been all wrong, but in the end the backlight from the sunshine just energised the spray as it lifted off from a lake".
This early morning shot of the very fragile, yet elegant Airglow human-powered aircraft, was shot from a drone in 2019.
"Sometimes something quite unexpected happens." As was the case with this overhead shot of the EAA AirVenture, Oshkosh site in 2017. Ed adds, "We were just circling trying to capture the scale of the Oshkosh site, when one of the sky-writing display aircraft drew a smiley face for the crowds below. It also worked perfectly, when viewed from above. If you'd planned it, it probably wouldn't have turned out anywhere near as well!"

Jonny Salmon

Jonny has been taking photos for a number of years as a hobby and enjoys any opportunity to get his camera out!

FLYER Club members Finn Catling (PIC) and Ben Wyatt shot on a Canon 5D Mark 3. Lots of thermals prevented a slow shutter speed.
The final flight of BA's 'Negus' livery 747-400 landing at Cotswold Airport in 2020. Shot on a Canon 450D.
You don't always need a DSLR. This was shot on an iPhone and Van's picked it for their 2019 calendar.
