Two British flex-wing microlight pilots have successfully completed one of the most demanding flights imaginable, reaching Iceland after a 580-mile North Atlantic crossing and more than six days of flying from the UK.

Trev Lee and Dave Bromley landed at Egilsstaðir Airport after a 5hr 27min flight from Vagar, in the Faroe Islands, arriving in the land of ice and fire in their open-cockpit flex-wing microlights.

The pair descended from 8,000ft before touching down on Egilsstaðir Airport’s 1,850m runway, marking the completion of the expedition’s most challenging leg. Earlier, they had flown from Stornoway to Vagar, a 3hr 42min flight over water.

Describing the arrival, Trev said: “Myself and Dave were actually quite emotional. We’d done it, we’d flown to Iceland. We gave each other a man hug and I had a lump in my throat.”

The crossing was the longest over-water leg of the journey and, according to Trev, “the biggest and wildest flying day of my life”.

The expedition began at Deenethorpe Aerodrome in Northamptonshire before routing north through Scotland and the Faroe Islands en route to Iceland. The pair now plan to spend several days exploring Iceland from both the ground and the air before waiting for a suitable weather window to make the return journey across the North Atlantic.

Although the flying is an adventure in itself, the expedition has a more serious purpose. Trev and Dave are raising money and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK, highlighting that one in eight men will be affected by the disease during their lifetime. Their previous Arctic Circle expedition in 2023 raised almost £9,000 for the charity, and the Iceland challenge aims to build on that success.

For the expedition, the pilots equipped their aircraft with extended-range fuel systems and carried emergency locator beacons, thermal dry suits and other survival equipment in preparation for the long sea crossings.

With Iceland safely reached, however, the adventure is only half over. As Trev noted, “Let’s not forget, we need to make it back home in the microlights too.”
