First production Kid single-seater unveiled

Reality Aircraft has unveiled the first production model of the Kid single-seater aircraft. The prototype Kid (G-OKID) first flew two years ago and Reality now has a great deal of experience of different engine and propeller configurations and flight characteristics. While Reality commented that the aeroplane performed faultlessly throughout testing, there were one or two engine issues to be sorted out. As a result of this flight testing several changes have been made and G-CGTZ is now updated compared to the original.
The most important change has been the installation of a single rotor Wankel engine. Although a 40hp engine Reality have elected to down-rate it to 37hp to reduce stresses at max continuous power. The Wankel does use more fuel than the Hirth and Reality now offers two carbon fibre fuel tanks so the aircraft has an improved cruising range.
The extra power of the Wankel enables the Kid to get airborne at max AUW (250kg) well within 50m on grass.
Another German engine, a 33hp air cooled, two-stroke, horizontally-opposed twin is under evaluation which, if approved, would provide adequate power and save several kilograms of weight.
There has also been a change to the shape of the fuselage which now gives better flight characteristics and a nicer appearance. The aircraft retain the two minute wing fold.
A ballistic recovery parachute system is undergoing final testing and should be available as an option soon.
As an SSDR (Single Seat De-Regulated) aircraft the Kid can be provided either as a kit or a completed, ready to fly microlight.
Reality are close to gaining Section S approval for the Kid design which will allow builders to exceed the 115kg SSDR and have a Permit aircraft.
