Summer has arrived and June’s Free Flyer Landings offer four very different destinations across the UK, from the Scottish Highlands to the rolling Wiltshire Downs.
Whether you’re planning a coastal day trip, a historic aviation pilgrimage or a weekend away, this month’s participating airfields provide plenty of reasons to get airborne.

Easter Airfield
Nestled near Tain in Ross-shire and just 30 minutes north of Inverness, Easter Airfield enjoys a reputation as one of Scotland’s most welcoming and picturesque flying destinations.
The privately owned, unlicensed airfield sits alongside the former RAF Fearn, later HMS Owl, and offers a 900-metre runway surrounded by some of the finest scenery in the Highlands. It’s an ideal stopping point for pilots exploring northern Scotland, with beaches, coastal walks and local hospitality all within easy reach.
Easter has an active resident flying community and regularly hosts informal fly-ins and summer barbecues when the famously unpredictable Highland weather allows.
Pilot information: PPR is required for all movements. Operations are entirely at the pilot’s own risk.

Eshott Airfield
Located nine miles north of Morpeth and only a few minutes from the spectacular Northumberland coastline, Eshott combines excellent facilities with a thriving aviation atmosphere.
Home to flight training, aircraft engineering, resident operators and a busy flying club, Eshott has become one of the North East’s best-known GA destinations. For visiting pilots, one of the biggest attractions is the popular on-site café, where hearty breakfasts, home-baked treats and good coffee can be enjoyed while watching aircraft movements from the viewing area.
The surrounding area offers easy access to Northumberland’s castles, beaches and countryside, making Eshott an excellent day-trip destination.
Pilot information: Airfield hours are 0900-1900. PPR is essential. Telephone 01670 787881.

Kingsmuir Airfield
Just south-east of Leuchars in Fife, Kingsmuir Airfield offers visitors a warm family welcome and a convenient gateway to one of Scotland’s most attractive regions.
The airfield was established in 1994 following the vision of Maureen Smith BEM, who wanted to fly home to the family farm after gaining her PPL. Since then, Kingsmuir has developed into a popular destination for touring pilots exploring Scotland.
Visitors can make use of the clubhouse facilities, stay overnight under canvas, and arrange onward transport to nearby attractions. Historic St Andrews, the world-famous Home of Golf, is only a short drive away and makes an ideal destination for pilots looking to combine flying with a round on one of Scotland’s iconic courses.
Pilot information: Open during daylight hours, weather permitting. PPR required on 07880 595447.

Yatesbury Airfield. Photo: Russ Pinder
Perched high on the Wiltshire Downs between Calne and Avebury, Yatesbury is an airfield steeped in aviation history.
Originally established as a Royal Flying Corps training station during the First World War, Yatesbury later became one of the RAF’s most important wireless and aircrew training centres during the Second World War. Thousands of wireless operators, air gunners and aircrew began their aviation journeys here before moving on to operational squadrons.
Today, the site’s aviation heritage lives on through the Wiltshire Microlight Centre, which continues to keep flying alive on this historic airfield. Visitors can enjoy excellent views from the Flight Deck Clubhouse while exploring a location that played a significant role in Britain’s wartime aviation story.
The modern airfield owes much to founder Tony Hughes, who established the centre after purchasing part of the former RAF site in 1994. Following Tony’s death in 2023, the airfield continues under the stewardship of his wife Sue, ensuring that his vision remains very much alive.
Located close to Avebury, Silbury Hill and some of Wiltshire’s most famous historic landmarks, Yatesbury makes an excellent destination for pilots looking to combine aviation with sightseeing.
Pilot information: PPR required on 07453 538233. Check local no-overflight areas before arrival. Free landing not available on 24 and 28 June.
