ICON caps year of expansion with A5 type certificate

ICON Aircraft has been granted a Type Certificate for its A5 amphibious aircraft by the US authority, the FAA.

Type certification allows ICON to take advantage of reciprocal agreements between the FAA and aviation governing bodies outside the US including those in the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America to certify the A5 to operate in these regions.

It also makes it easier for owners to fly internationally.

Jerry Meyer, CEO of ICON Aircraft, said, “Receiving FAA Type Certification for the ICON A5 in the primary category is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire ICON team.

“It allows us to expand our market potential around the world, and it underscores the commitment of ICON Aircraft to innovation and excellence in design.”

2023 was a busy year for ICON, according to a company statement. Highlights include:

  • Flight hours: Flight training, sales demo, R&D and delivery teams collectively logged thousands of hours in the A5 this year.
  • Deliveries: There are now more than 210 ICON A5s in 13 countries.
  • ICON Owner Community: The ICON Owners & Pilots Association (IOPA) continues to grow both online and in the real world.
  • Flight Training: The ICON Flight Training Network continues to expand with more than 65 authorised instructors worldwide. The two most recent additions are Channel Islands Aviation in Camarillo, CA, and ICONIC Adventures in Gatlinburg, TN.
  • 4-blade lightweight propeller which weighs approximately eight pounds less than the stock A5 propeller and improves take-off performance by 10-12 percent.
