LAA and BMAA may amalgamate

Press releases posted on the Light Aircraft Association and British Microlight Aircraft Association websites this have revealed that the two organisations are in talks about a possible amalgamation.

The two have, we are told, had an eye to a possible merger for a while, without any significant progress being made. But recent developments appear to have brought the idea back onto the agenda, resulting in today’s announcement.

The BMAA’s Chief Executive, Geoff Weighell, speaking of the differences betweeen the two organisations, suggested “the edges are getting blurred – we have more in common than we used to have,” adding that a “stronger organisation will protect all its members better.”

Among the issues still to be addressed before any amalgamation can go ahead, is that of the merged body’s name. Initial reaction is that this could be one of the more complicated parts of the negotiation.
