Northern Ireland restrictions to be lifted

The CAA has announced that it will be disestablishing many areas of prohibited and restricted airspace in Northern Ireland, with effect from 1 August 2007. This has been requested by the military as part of the ‘normalisation’ programme in the province. Many of the restrictions were put in place during Operation Banner in the 1970s.

The areas are: EG P414 (Lisburn); EG P417 (Omagh); EG P422 (Londonderry); EG P424 (Armagh); EG P425 (Ballykinler); EG P434 (Dungannon); EG P436 (South Armagh); EG P438 (Enniskillen Town); EG P502 (Magilligan); EG R421 (Belfast) and EG R503 (Ballykelly).

Note that the restricted airspace EG R431 around the high security prison at Maghaberry will remain, but will transferred to come under the restrictions for prisons.

The relevant laws, AIP entries and charts will be updated in due course.
