Rotax launches 912 iS

Rotax has launched the fuel-injected 912 iS, a development of the popular 912 but featuring an ECU controlled dual fuel injection system and offering improved fuel efficiency of up to 70% over comparable engines. The new engine is also said to offer lower operating costs (with savings of up to Euro3,000 per 100 hours of flight), a TBO of 2,000 hours and reduced emmissions. Power output remains at 100hp, although the torque figures are slightly lower and the engine is 4kg heavier than the carburetted version, which probably makes it too heavy for most microlights. The pricing is expected to put it 14-17% more expensive than the carburettor version.
At a press launch at Rotax’s HQ, it was explained that the engine has totalled 700 flight test hours so far, plus 10,000 on the test bench.
“The development of a four-stroke, four-cylinder 100hp aircraft engine with a redundant electronic fuel injection system is a first in the industry; it makes it ideal for all kinds of light sport aircraft, generating increased opportunities in general aviation market,” said Gerd Ohrnberger, vice-president and general manager, Powertrain division.
