Royal Navy launches aviation degree

The Royal Navy has launched the ”Fleet Air Arm Military Aviation Academy’, the first higher education institute of its kind. It will, in association with the Open University, give its students the chance to study for a Foundation Degree in Military Aviation Studies.

Based mainly at Yeovilton and Culdrose, the Academy will take A level students who will, according to the Navy, gain their foundation degree “while learning to fly the most technologically advanced helicopters and fast jets”.

Initially, students will attend officer training at the Britannia Royal Navy College in Dartmouth; once they go on to the Academy they will benefit from free tuition fees, earnings of up to £25,000 a year and a guaranteed career in the Royal Navy as a pilot or observer. Upon qualifying, they can expect to be posted to a front-line squadron, and can also opt to continue their studies towards a BSc.

As yet, the Academy doesn’t have a website – your best bet is to go to the Royal Navy careers page and select the ‘Air’ option.
