Sandown to close

The Isle of Wight Airport, Sandown, is due to close on 1 October, 2010, due to what the Airport Manager, Dick Steele, describes as a ‘totally uneconomic’ situation. In a statement issued by Saffron Harrop, a director of the airfield, it stated, “You will be aware that the airfield has long standing viability issues. In our opinion this is unlikely to change in the future. We regret to inform you of the closure of the airport on Friday 1st October. All flight operations will be prohibited and the runways and taxiways will cease to exist from this date.
“Groundwork investigations for the future development of the site will begin in October.”
In 2007 Sandown Airport suffered a fire that destroyed most of the Aviator Restaurant while at a later date restrictions were imposed on the length of the licensed runway. Click here for more
