Spitfire undercarriage collapses at East Midlands

East Midlands Airport was closed for two hours on Monday 7 January after the undercarriage of Spitfire PS853 collapsed as the aircraft was coming in to land. The pilot was not injured but the runway was closed while debris was cleared away. Flights to East Midlands Airport were diverted to Birmingham during the closure.
The restored Spitfire, now civil registered as G-RRGN and owned by Rolls-Royce, is housed at East Midlands Airport and had only recently returned to the skies following an extensive 23-month refurbishment at Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire.
A spokesman for East Midlands Airport said the aircraft had been removed from the runway and all flights had resumed.
