Steve Fossett's aircraft found

The wreckage of Steve Fossett’s aircraft has been found in California. The wreckage of the Super Decathlon has been identified from its registration, and the authorities say that although there is no body in the aircraft, small traces of human remains have been found – enough to provide a DNA sample.

The search for the missing explorer and aviation multi-record holder moved to the vicinity of Mammoth Lakes in California yesterday, after a hiker found items belonging to Fossett (including his pilot’s licence) a few hundred yards from where the wreckage was later found.

Most of the fuselage had disintegrated, with engine parts scattered over a wide area. Those who know the terrain, though, say that wild animals could easily have removed the body some time ago and it’s possible that no remains will ever be found.

Fossett disappeared on a flight last September. He was declared dead by a judge in February.
