Swiss pilot crashes on way to Oshkosh

<b>News from <a href=”http://www.airventure.org”><img src=”images/airventure.gif” border=”0″>Oshkosh</a></b>

Amid all the upbeat feeling at this year’s Airventure at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, there’s a note of sadness.

Swiss pilot Hans Georg Schmid, who had 16,000 hours as an airline pilot, had just taken off from Basel for a (potentially record-breaking) flight to Oshkosh when his Experimental Express 2000 ER crashed into the attic of an apartment building in the city.

Schmid’s body was found in a nearby park. Seven other people are reported to have been slightly injured in the accident, which happened yesterday morning.

Schmid is said to have held 160 aviation records, and was planning to fly around the world twice later this year. The aircraft, which Schmid had designed himself, made its first flight last month.
