Tecnam retractable comes to UK

The kitbuilt Tecnam Sierra RG, which we reviewed in Italy last year, will be coming to the UK, it has been revealed.

The aircraft will be more or less exactly the same as the EASA-certified version which we flew in Italy and reported in our September 2006 issue (under its production name of P2002 JR). At the time we wondered out loud whether a retractable version of the kitbuild (which is called the Sierra) would be available for the UK – and now we have our answer.

The first Sierra RG in the UK will be built by Paul Mitchell, who is the UK distributor. He has already got LAA (Light Aircraft Association, formerly known as the PFA) clearance to build the aircraft and gain UK approval; the aircraft parts will be arriving at the workshop this week. Paul hopes to have the aircraft – registered as G-TESR – on show at the first LAA Regional Rally at Dunkeswell in early May.

G_TESR will be fitted with a Dynon Flight deck D180 combined EFIS/EM with the new Filser 8.33 radio and Filser 800a 125watt transponder along with a Flymap GPS and Trio autopilot (Paul happens to be an agent for Dynon Avionics, Trio Avionics and Rollason Strobes and Flymap GPS!)

We’ll be watching progress closely because we have loved all previous versions of this aircraft (it was our Aircraft of the Year in 2005).
