Trig introduces lightweight Mode S unit

Edinburgh-based Trig Avionics has launched its new ‘miniature’ Mode S transponder. The TT21 is claimed to be the world’s smallest and lightest Mode S unit, weighing in at less than 500 grammes and capable of fitting into a 57mm diameter instrument cut-out – or where space is really at a premium, in an ultra-compact 42x57mm cut-out. Depth behind the panel is less than 70mm.

The rear box is not much larger than a pack of cards, says the company, and can be mounted anywhere convenient in the aircraft. A lightweight cable connects the controller to the rear box; aircraft power and the antenna cable also plug into the rear box.

Despite the small size the TT21 nominal power output for reply pulses is 130 Watts, and it even supports ADS-B out using 1090MHz extended squitters, which means that it offers a path to future ADS-B based surveillance.

The company is seeking certification in Europe – it hopes to receive EASA certification just after Christmas – and the US. The TT21 will be available in February 2009, and should retail for around £1,295.
