UK company unveils new diesel engine

A UK company has launched its new diesel engine at the AirVenture fly-in at Oshkosh in the USA.

Powerplant Developments have revealed that their three-cylinder, opposed piston two-stroke diesel engine is the engine which they believe could revolutionise the industry. The Gemini 100 is aimed mainly at the LSA (Light Sport Aircraft) market as its 100 hp and 75 kg weight are specifications which that market has been crying out for, particularly in a diesel engine.

The engine’s design eliminates the need for a camshaft, valve gear and cylinder head joints and is based on 1930s technology. This involves twin pistons (in each of the three cylinders) firing toward each other; when the mixture combusts they are driven apart.

Powerplant Developments is a collaboration between Weslake Air Services and Jade Air.
