Wellesbourne under continued threat

Wellesbourne airfield

A second open meeting has recently been held regarding the ongoing threat to develop Wellesbourne airfield for housing.
Stratford upon Avon District Council has received a proposal from Gladman Developments to build 1,600 houses on the airfield, submitted with the intention of being included in Stratford’s Core Strategy. A copy of the proposal can be downloaded here.
According to an airfield users’ group opposing the development, whilst it currently appears that the proposal will not be supported by the Council, there is a possibility that the developer will seek to pursue it during the examination of the Core Strategy and the airfield is still very much under threat of development.
Since learning of the proposal, the group has gathered information which shows that the airfield already brings significant economic value to the surrounding area. Potential for the airfield includes a professional visitor centre for the Vulcan, an extended cafe/restaurant/B&B, proper accommodation for the schools, hangarage, with the intention of producing a document which shows a vision for the future of the airfield.
The airfield group has said it now needs to build on this information, and is requesting volunteer help. A statement from the group explains, ‘We need professional industry people with a background in Highways, Planning, Architecture, Retail, Environment, Design & Presentation, Tourism, Media and PR. We also need a full time volunteer Project Manager who can oversee the production of the document. We need more volunteers – lots of them – to help with all the background work. And, of course, we need funds to make all this happen. We have already received a considerable sum in donations but if we are to present a professional case to fight this threat, then that will require significant financial support.’
