Yak pilot's family wins court case

The family of a Yak 52 pilot who died in a crash in 2003 has won a sum – being reported as £270,000 – in damages.

The AAIB report into the accident found that it had been caused by “a small short-handled flat-bladed screwdriver, which had become impaled on the swaged end of the lower elevator cable at its attachment to the aft quadrant assembly.”

The AAIB report, which can be read <a href=’http://www.aaib.dft.gov.uk/cms_resources/dft_avsafety_pdf_024587.pdf’ target=’_blank’>here</a>, contains details of the investigation into how the tool may have got there.

It’s a sobering reminder of the danger of loose objects in the cockpit or anywhere in the airframe.
