Yak pilot's family wins court case

The family of a Yak 52 pilot who died in a crash in 2003 has won a sum – being reported as £270,000 – in damages.

The AAIB report into the accident found that it had been caused by “a small short-handled flat-bladed screwdriver, which had become impaled on the swaged end of the lower elevator cable at its attachment to the aft quadrant assembly.”

It’s a sobering reminder of the danger of loose objects in the cockpit or anywhere in the airframe.
