Airfield wins Healthy Eating Award

The Shropshire Aero Club, based at Sleap Airfield near Shrewsbury, has been awarded a ‘Silver Award for Healthy Eating’ by the North Shropshire District Council for its airfield cafe.

Busting the normal image of the airfield ‘caff’ as the home of the ‘greasy spoon £100 bacon butty’, Shropshire Aero Club’s cafe manager Mark Whittle carefully selects his ingredients and preparation methods, and it’s this attention to detail which led to the award of this Silver status.

The Club says that it ‘may be the only flying club in the country to boast such an award’. Along with all day breakfasts and bacon sandwiches, a selection of baked potatoes, sandwiches on wholemeal bread and oatcakes are now available at the cafe.

The Club adds: ‘Visitors are welcome at Sleap so why not come along and enjoy a meal while watching planes take off and land. You may even like to try flying for yourself, trial lessons are available. For more information visit www.shropshireaeroclub.co.uk or call the office on 01939 232 882.

It goes on to say: ‘Attracting flying visits from pilots from all over the UK and abroad, The Shropshire Aero Club offers extremely competitive rates on fuel and flying lessons.’
