A planning application to rebuild Old Sarum’s Grade II* listed Hangar 3 has been approved by Wiltshire County Council.

Hangar 3 is one of three that are ‘of historic interest’ and suffered partial collapse during January’s Storm Isha.

The application was made by Grenvill Hodge of Old Sarum Airfield Ltd working with architects Fielden and Mawson and builder James Carroll who recently rebuilt a similar hangar at RAF Hooton Park. The cost is estimated at £3.08m.

The condition report in the planning application says, “The hangars at Old Sarum airfield are of historic interest because they are an early example of large structures built to accommodate aircraft.

“They are of particular significance because the large spans were achieved using timber lattice trusses (known as Belfast trusses), rather than steel.

“Their importance is reflected in their Grade II* Listing, as relatively unchanged examples of buildings of this type.”

The repairs include:

  • Repair/replace damaged or missing trusses
  • Reroof the hangar with a standing seam roof
  • Repairs/rebuilding to the walls, doors, floor, clerestory windows and rooflights.

The council decision made it clear that work should begin within three years and that it does not have any impact on other planning applications at the airfield.
