Garmin G2000 PRIME flight deck for high-performance GA aircraft

Garmin has introduced the G2000 PRIME, an integrated flight deck designed for high-performance piston and electric aircraft, offering many of the sophisticated features usually found on turbine aircraft.

Announced ahead of next week’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the new avionics suite builds on the technology introduced with Garmin’s G3000 PRIME flight deck but has been tailored for Class I and II aircraft.

Garmin says the system is intended to reduce pilot workload while increasing situational awareness through a combination of large touchscreen displays, enhanced automation and advanced safety features.

At the heart of the new system are 14-inch edge-to-edge touchscreen Primary Display Units (PDUs), featuring sunlight-readable, fingerprint-resistant glass.

Garmin says the hardware represents a significant leap over previous generations, with four times the memory, more than double the processing power and system networking speeds up to 100 times faster than earlier Garmin integrated flight decks.

Higher display refresh rates are also claimed to deliver smoother graphics and more responsive operation.

 

Supporting the main displays are new seven-inch Secondary Display Units (SDUs), which provide system control, flight management and data entry. Depending on the aircraft installation, these can also serve as an integrated standby flight instrument, potentially eliminating the need for separate backup instrumentation.

The G2000 PRIME is built around an all-touchscreen interface. The displays recognise up to ten simultaneous touch inputs, allowing both pilots to interact with the same display at once.

Garmin has also incorporated hand stabilisation so pilots can rest a hand on the screen while making precise selections, addressing one criticism of touchscreen avionics in turbulence.

The new flight deck also introduces intelligent electronic checklists linked directly to Crew Alerting System (CAS) messages.

If an alert appears, pilots can tap it to open the relevant checklist immediately. The system can even detect when switches or controls have already been placed in the correct position, automatically confirming checklist items or displaying detailed aircraft system synoptics where appropriate.

G2000 PRIME supports Garmin’s growing suite of safety technologies. These include Garmin Autoland, which can automatically land an aircraft if the pilot becomes incapacitated, together with Smart Glide, Electronic Stability Protection (ESP), Emergency Descent Mode, Smart Rudder Bias and Garmin Autothrottle.

On the ground, Runway Occupancy Awareness joins Garmin’s existing SurfaceWatch and 3D SafeTaxi features, using GPS and ADS-B traffic data to warn crews of potential runway incursions or conflicts.

Garmin has not yet announced which aircraft makers have chosen G2000 PRIME, saying the first aircraft programmes equipped with the system will be revealed by aircraft manufacturers in due course.
