Lancashire Aero Club pilot scholarship

Lancashire Aero Club has announced a new pilot training scholarship worth over £8,000. The Tom Dugdale Scholarship celebrates the club’s 90th anniversary and is named after the club’s President. A spokesman for the club explained, “We want to select a suitable young person to be funded by Lancashire Aero Club to gain their Private Pilots Licence (Single Engine Airplane). This will include 45 hours aircraft hire, instruction and the required study manuals. Also included is membership to Lancashire Aero Club and medical fees. The scholarship must be completed within an 18 month period from 1st March 2012. The candidate must organise their own transport to and from the airfield during the scholarship.”

The candidate criteria for the scholarship are:

a) Open to both male and female.
b) Must be a British subject.
c) Aged between 17 and 21 years in the qualifying year 2012.
d) Must live in the Lancashire or Greater Manchester region – determined by post code.
e) Must demonstrate ability and a serious ambition to learn to fly.
f) Must have the availability to undertake and seriously commit to completion of flying training within 2012.
g) Demonstrate educational achievements, demonstrable knowledge and/or experience in
science, mathematics or aviation related subjects.
h) You must be able to satisfy the relevant JAA Class 2 medical standard.

Selection process
a) Required to write a letter of no less than 500 words explaining why Lancashire Aero Club
should give them the opportunity to gain their Private Pilots Licence.
b) The candidates should also include contact details with their letter.
c) 6 candidates will be selected from letters received and interviewed by a panel of judges.
d) Three candidates will be selected for a flight test.
e) The 3 will have a second interviewed.
f) One will be selected for the scholarship.
