Secret(ish) mission: fly a Lysander

Few aircraft truly deserve the term ‘iconic’.. Spitfire, Hurricane, Mustang definitely. The Aerial Collective at Duxford believes the Westland Lysander is another – and now they are offering flights.

Flights in the Lysander are limited in number, says the Collective, which works closely with the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford.

“Following a detailed safety briefing at our hangar facilities, you will join one of our seasoned pilots within our pilot’s hut and on-airfield private viewing area,” said a statement from the Aerial Collective.

“Here you will be equipped with a flight suit and gloves and discuss any personal desires for your flight experience with your pilot.

“Strapped in, you will be facing rearwards and towards the tail of the aircraft, making the most of the Lysander’s large canopy and the views out across the English Countryside passing below.

“As an aircraft heavily known for completing clandestine operations during the Second World War, you will have the opportunity to look down upon some of the most significant and secretive airfields from the Lysander’s wartime legacy.”

Those airfields include former Lysander bases, RAF Tempsford and RAF Newmarket.

Prices for the Lysander flights are expensive, starting from £4,500, but what an experience.
